My career as a trail builder started in 1988 working at the Midpeninsula Regional Open
Space District in the San Francisco Bay Area. I was their first Supervising Ranger of
Maintenance and Construction. I worked with the crew, contractors, and volunteers
building, designing, and maintaining some of the most heavily used trails in the region.
Most of the trails were multi-use natural surface trails. However, we built wheelchair
accessible trails using crusher fines surfacing too.
After 15 years of service, I retired from the District and moved to Amherst,
Massachusetts where my work and education involving trails continues.
I returned to college to complete my degree in 2005 at the University of Massachusetts.
My degree specialized in Park Management and Natural Resources Planning focusing on
trail issues, especially how well designed trails minimize environmental impacts and
user conflicts.
I enjoy teaching others about the benefits of well designed trails, and lead volunteer trail
crews about twice a year for the town of Amherst. Volunteers are a wonderful way to
build community and stewardship of our trails, and they fulfill a critical need.
In Western Massachusetts, there is lots of support for land preservation and trails. This
high level of support led me to believe there is a need for professional trail services in
our region. I started TrailTech to provide these services.
